Anatomy of Container Logistics - Singapore

When this programme was last delivered in 2009 the focus concentrated on the survival of the container industry, the slashing of costs in the form of vessel lay-ups and slow steaming. During 2009 alone, the top 20 carriers lost US$21 billion and there were grave doubts whether many of these operators would survive.

Now some 15 months further on, the world’s Asian economies are booming again, the carriers have not only survived, but financially thrived as freight rates have risen substantially on most of the major trade routes - but all is not well. Deep seated animosity simmers below the surface in the shipper-carrier relationships. Perceptions prevail of fickle shippers and arrogant carriers, with the result that relationships have been strained to breaking point. The Third Container Revolution is at hand.

Does this antagonistic approach bode well for the industry’s future, or would cooperation rather than confrontation produce more satisfactory results for all parties?

These and many other questions will be explored during the seminar which will highlight the following key topics:

  • Optimising logistical operations
  • Slow steaming and its impact on schedule keeping
  • Pressures to eliminate the shipping conference system in Asia and North America
  • Role of Shippers’ Councils
  • Increase in Consortia and VSA agreements
  • Supply chain optimisation and the management of risks
  • Selection of carrier partners and the validity of service contracts
  • E-commerce and its impact on carrier organisations
  • Intermediaries growing stake in the container business
  • Heightened security arrangements and their effect on the international movement of goods.
